Gotabaya Rajapaksa trying to get US citizenship: Former Sri Lankan President applied for a green card, wife is already a US citizen
Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has applied for a green card to settle in the US. Last month, people in Sri Lanka organized anti-government protests demanding his resignation, due to which he fled the country. According to media reports, his wife and son have already settled in America.
Sri Lankan newspaper Daily Mirror, quoting sources, claimed that Rajapaksa's lawyers in the US started the process of getting a green card for him only last month. His wife Loma Rajapaksa is already a US citizen, so he could apply for a green card. Gotabaya also held US citizenship but renounced US citizenship to participate in Sri Lanka's presidential election in 2019.
Rajapaksa is currently in a hotel in Bangkok with his wife. Earlier he was supposed to stay in Thailand till November, but now he has cancelled his plan. He is scheduled to return to Sri Lanka on August 25. They are not allowed to live freely in Thailand due to security reasons. Here the police have advised them not to come out of the hotel.
Rajapaksa went into the field of information technology after premature retirement from the Sri Lankan army. After this, in 1998, he settled in America. He returned to Sri Lanka in 2005. After Gotabaya's return to Sri Lanka, as a former President, the cabinet will discuss the matter of giving him a home and security from the government.
