After Meta, Alphabet-owned Google also decided to start a review of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and shut down the pilot scheme for recruiting more workers from underrepresented groups.

Alphabet's Chief People Officer Fiona Cicconi said in an email sent to employees on Wednesday, "In 2020 we set diversity-based hiring goals and focused on increasing our offices outside California and New York to improve representation. But in the future, we will no longer have aspirational goals."

It is worth noting that Google has been one of the most vocal companies pushing for more inclusive policies for several years in the wake of protests against the death of George Floyd and other black Americans at the hands of police in 2020. This move by Google and Meta is being seen as a major change, which is also happening in other US companies. Especially after the US Supreme Court's decision in 2023, many companies have been forced to revisit their DEI programs.
