Google earned ₹81 crores from misleading abortion ads: thousands of people were told the website of fake clinics

The search engine Google has earned crores of rupees by directing thousands of people searching for abortion and pregnancy to the websites of fake clinics in the US. A new study states that these clinics do not provide abortion and medical services.
Google redirected users searching for the abortion term to ads for so-called crisis pregnancy centers. Instead of getting abortions done, these centers prevent people from getting them done. Imran Ahmed, CEO of countering misinformation organization Countering Digital Hate Center, said the investigative report paints a picture of misleading advertising by fake healthcare clinics and groups spreading false information.
According to media reports, it has been told in the study that Google, which earns Rs 16 lakh crore every year from advertisements, has earned more than Rs 81 crore in two years from misleading advertisements of fake abortion clinics. Anti-abortion centers known as Crisis Pregnancy Centers have been running for a long time.
In 2022, they will outnumber actual abortion clinics. Crisis centers misinform people that having an abortion can cause cancer and other diseases. Americans make more than 100 million searches regarding abortion every year. But researchers say, Google advertising played a key role by sending users to the ads at the top of the page.
Using the analytics tool SemRush, researchers reportedly found the sites of 188 fake clinics that advertised on Google searches over the past two years.
