He was born into a family of wrestlers in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh in the early 1900s. She grew up practicing the art of wrestling and won over 300 competitions in her career in the 1940s and 1950s.
In the 1940s and 1950s, Hamida Bano had put out a challenge, promising marriage to the person who beat her in a dangal. Hamida faced off against Firoz Khan of Lahore in her first wrestling match with a man in 1937, and the victory earned her a lot of notoriety. Firoz Khan was astounded by Hamida. Hamida went on to defeat another wrestler from Kolkata named Kharag Singh, who was Sikh. Hamida had been challenged by both of them to wed him.
