Union Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel pointed out that new annual HIV infections in India have shown a 44% reduction since the year 2010. India has surpassed the global reduction rate in new annual HIV infections as it has reduced by only 39% globally.

Union Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel was addressing a high-level programmme at the United Nations. The program was themed "Reviving Multilateralism: Recommitting to End AIDS Together", organized by UNAIDS, the Global Fund and PEPFAR.

This statement by Anupriya Patel points toward India's commitment to the containment of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and has thus set a very healthy trend in public health within the country. Patel emphasized that India was committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of eliminating HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

She underlined the significant progress made by India in this direction, citing the latest 'India HIV Estimates 2023' report. The report shows that more than 2.5 million people in India are currently living with HIV. However, through concerted efforts, the prevalence of HIV among adults has remained at 0.2 percent and the estimated annual new HIV infections are around 66,400. This reflects a strong national response to the HIV/AIDS challenge.''
