Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the active role of the Indian presidency has 'truly consolidated' the G20 countries from the Global South for the first time in history. Sergei Lavrov addressed a press conference after the conclusion of the G20 summit and referred to the New Delhi Declaration. He said that a healthy solution has been found in this manifesto.
Praising India's presidency of the G20, Lavrov said, 'There is still a long way to go but this summit was a milestone. I would also like to mention the active role of the Indian Presidency which for the first time in history has truly united the G20 countries from the Global South. Our BRICS partners – Brazil, India, China, and South Africa have been particularly active.
Lavrov also mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposal to hold a virtual G20 session in November at the end of India's G20 presidency. Concluding today's session, PM Modi said he will convene another G20 summit through video conferencing in late November. “This will be another opportunity for us to review the implementation of the agreements we have reached today,” Lavrov said. The Russian leader accused Western countries of not fulfilling their promises of funding to tackle climate change.
Lavrov said, 'The West also promised long ago to provide US$100 billion per year to combat the negative consequences of climate change, but nothing has been done on that. The manifesto also outlines the actions that need to be taken in line with long-standing commitments to ensure a balance of interests in the global economy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in the day announced the conclusion of the G20 summit and proposed holding a virtual G20 session in November to review the suggestions and proposals made at the premier forum for international economic cooperation. Before declaring the summit over, PM Modi handed over the chairmanship of the Group of 20 to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
