French President Emmanuel Macron made a historic visit to Sri Lanka. Here he met Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Sri Lankan delegation. During this, bilateral cooperation between the two countries and the open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region were discussed. Let me tell you, this visit is the first visit of a French President to Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan President's office said that during the 'historic' visit, Wickremesinghe and Macron held friendly and productive bilateral discussions which lasted for one hour and fifteen minutes. According to the statement, the main objective of the visit was to enhance and elevate the existing relations between Sri Lanka and France.
This year also marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The statement said that as Sri Lanka's fourth-largest lender, France has pledged its assistance in the debt restructuring process with the goal of a positive outcome for the country.
Macron arrived in Sri Lanka on the night of 28 July after his visit to the South Pacific region. Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabri tweeted on Saturday, 'Welcome the historic visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Sri Lanka. During the bilateral meeting between our delegations, we discussed a wide range of areas of French-Sri Lankan cooperation and agreed to further strengthen our ties.'
Macron also made a post on Twitter after the meeting. Macron wrote, 'Sri Lanka and France are two Indian Ocean nations that share the same goal. An open, inclusive, and prosperous Indo-Pacific. Strengthened by 75 years of diplomatic relations, we can begin a new era of our partnership.' Discussions between the two leaders focused on strengthening cooperation in various fields including politics, economics, tourism, climate change, sustainable development, and maritime activities.
