Four tremors of earthquake were felt in Jammu region on Wednesday in a single day. The four tremors of the earthquake on Wednesday spread panic among the residents. An earthquake of 5.4 magnitude hit Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district on Tuesday.
An earthquake of magnitude 3.3 was recorded in Kishtwar at 8.29 am on Wednesday. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), its epicenter was at a depth of five kilometers. Earlier, a tremor of magnitude 3.5 was recorded at 7.56 am in Doda. The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km.
An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 at a depth of 10 km was recorded in Doda district at 2.20 am. According to the NCS, the second earthquake, which had a magnitude of 2.8, occurred 74 km east of Katra in Reasi district at 2.43 am. Its center was at a depth of five kilometers.
Bhaderwah's Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Dilmir Chowdhary said that the collector ordered the closure of all schools to address the concerns of parents and ensure the safety of students. After this, all the schools were closed. The ADC appealed to the residents here not to panic as the situation could worsen.
Instead, he advised people to take precautionary measures to prevent any untoward incident. Similarly, the authorities in Kishtwar also closed schools in the district as a precautionary measure. Four earthquakes, including two high-intensity ones, have caused cracks in dozens of buildings since Tuesday.
The latest earthquakes not only created panic among the people but revived the scare of 2013 when tremors were felt continuously for 70 days in the entire region in general and the Bhaderwah Valley in particular.
Tuesday's earthquake damaged several buildings in the two hilly districts of Doda and Kishtwar. Five people, including two schoolchildren, received injuries. The administration closed the schools as a precautionary measure. The earthquake was felt in the Jammu and Kashmir region and neighboring states.
According to NCS, looking at the data of the last five years shows that small earthquakes are the normal seismic activity in the vicinity of the Doda region.
