Former Facebook employee exposed dark realities of Mark Zuckerberg's empire
Facebook: The truth about Mark Zuckerberg and his team prioritizing growth over ethics has been revealed. This disclosure has exposed many serious problems like Facebook's failure in data privacy, political manipulation, and harassment at the workplace.

Former Facebook (now Meta) executive Sarah Win-Williams has disclosed a number of such aspects of the social media giant in her recent book "Careless People: A Story of Where I Used to Work" of which hardly anyone knows. The book exposes the truth on Facebook's toxic work culture, aggressive business tactics, and Mark Zuckerberg and his team prioritizing growth over morality. This expose has revealed a number of serious matters like Facebook's data privacy breach, political interference, and workplace harassment.
Winn-Williams, who worked at Facebook from 2011 until 2018, compared the firm to a virtual 'cult' where employees were meant to be fully devoted to the company's mission. In a remarkable anecdote, she recounted writing a critical memo on Facebook's expansion even while she was suffering labor pains.
Her husband protested, but the doctor himself had to come and shut down her laptop. She also criticized Sheryl Sandberg's 'Lean In' ideology, which encouraged women to work harder, but in reality, it was promoting a self-exploitative work culture.
One of the most shocking revelations in this book is Facebook's role in Myanmar, where the platform became a medium for spreading hatred and inciting violence. Mark Zuckerberg's "Free Basics" plan was presented as an attempt to bring free internet to developing countries, but it was actually a way for Facebook to dominate globally.
Winn-Williams admitted that initially, he believed in Facebook's mission to 'connect the world', but later he saw Facebook in Myanmar become a tool for the military dictatorship to spread hatred and incite violence against Rohingya Muslims. He wrote: "If Facebook had not come to Myanmar, this country would be a better place."
The book also mentions sexual harassment by top Facebook officials. He alleged that several senior officials, including Facebook's global affairs chief Joel Kaplan, behaved inappropriately with female employees.
In one incident, Sandberg offered her to sleep in the same bed with him during a work trip. She turned it down, but later worried whether this would affect her career? She wrote that Facebook's top leadership was aware of these problems, but ignored it.
After the publication of the book, Meta completely rejected Winn-Williams' claims. A company spokesperson described the report as a "mix of old and false reports" and said it was just a disgruntled former employee trying to sell a book, although Winn-Williams claimed that even though Facebook had rebranded itself as 'Meta', its culture had not changed. He warned that as Zuckerberg moves into the world of artificial intelligence (AI), Facebook's irresponsible culture could lead to even greater risks.
