The preliminary report of the investigation into the major train accident in Pakistan's Sindh province has come to the fore.
According to this report, the mishap took place due to missing fishplates and a damaged track. On August 5, the Hazara Express train going from Karachi to Rawalpindi derailed in Nawabshah district near Sarhari railway station, 275 km from the provincial capital Karachi. At least 31 people died in this accident.
"Hazara Express derailed due to missing fishplate and damaged track," Dawn newspaper quoted preliminary reports on Tuesday as saying. A six-member investigation team of Pakistan Railways released the report on Monday. The report said that after examining all aspects, we have come to the conclusion that the accident was caused due to missing fishplates.
The team has also told the slipping of the engine of the train as another reason behind the derailment. The report said that the engine of the train had left the site without being checked by senior officials. In addition, 'small hitting spots' were found on the iron fishplate and wooden terminal beyond the crash site. The engineering branch and the mechanical branch have been held responsible for the accident.
The administration of the People's Medical College Hospital said that over 120 injured were shifted to the hospital and most of them have been discharged after treatment, while 30 people are currently undergoing treatment.
In addition, a total of 29 bodies have been claimed and taken away by family members, while the bodies of two dead women are still in the hospital.
The report said that this was a preliminary inquiry report as it would take some time to prepare the final report. The report added that a detailed investigation is underway as railway inspectors from the federal government are at the spot to ascertain the reason behind the tragedy.
