Electricity demand increased by about 9 percent in the last 8 months, highest demand in September
The country's electricity consumption during the April-November period in FY24 increased by nearly nine per cent to 1099.90 billion units (BU) due to an increase in economic activities in the current financial year (FY24) compared to the same period last year. Due to an increase in economic activities in the current financial year i.e. FY24, electricity consumption in the country has increased by almost nine per cent to 1,099.90 billion units (BU) during April-November compared to the same period a year ago. Electricity consumption in the country stood at 1,010.20 BU in the same period a year ago.
Let us tell you that in the last FY 23, electricity consumption was 1,504.26 BU, while in FY 22 the consumption was 1,374.02 BU.
The Energy Ministry had estimated that the electricity demand in the country would reach 229 GW during summer but due to unseasonal rains, the demand did not reach the estimated level in April-July.
The electricity demand was highest in September of the current financial year. Electricity demand was at a record high of 243.27 GW in September. If we talk about June, the demand had increased to 224.1 GW in June, which had come down to 209.03 GW in July.
The maximum electricity demand reached 238.82 GW in August and reached a new record in September. After this, the maximum demand in October was 222.16 GW, whereas in the last month i.e. November, the electricity demand was 204.86 GW.
According to experts, the main reason for the increase in electricity consumption in August, September and October was the increase in industrial activities due to the impact of humid weather and festival crowds.

In terms of energy, electricity demand has increased by 50.8 per cent from 2013-14 to 2022-23. He told the House that the maximum electricity demand has increased from 136 GW in 2013-14 to 243 GW in September 2023.
