Nikhil is in the news for his performance in the Australian franchise T-20 League Big Bash, but at one time he was struggling to get a chance to play in the IPL. Despite giving trials twice for Mumbai Indians in 2019, Nikhil was not selected. A few days later, he went to Australia to spend his holidays, but due to the Corona epidemic there was a lockdown and he got stuck in Brisbane. By the time the lockdown was relaxed, Nikhil had made up his mind to settle there and started his cricket career there.
Nikhil decided to pursue his cricket career in Brisbane, but for this, he also had to be financially strong. Nikhil initially started working in a Mexican restaurant, but after a knife injury to his finger, he took a job as a courier boy at Australia Post. His job as a courier boy allowed him to know Brisbane better.
Nikhil said, that after settling in Australia, I aimed to make it to the Big Bash so that I could get a big platform to showcase my skills. He said I made a new beginning in Brisbane. I did not need to change my technique on the fast and bouncy wickets here because domestic cricket in India is often played on such wickets. There are no turning pitches here like you see in Test matches. However here I had to face tough competition.
Nikhil did wonders with his batting in the T-20 Max tournament in Queensland. In the semi-finals, he attracted everyone's attention by playing an explosive inning of 71 runs in 28 balls. He hit 7 sixes in this inning. Seeing Nikhil's performance, Hobart Hurricanes signed him for this season.
Nikhil says that on the recommendation of his coach James Hopes, he got a chance to play for the Big Bash League franchise Hobart Hurricanes. Hopes is included in the support staff of the franchise. In his first match in Big Bash 2023-24, the Indian-origin all-rounder thrilled everyone by playing a stormy innings of 40 runs against Perth Scorchers.
Nikhil has become the second cricketer of Indian origin to play in the Big Bash League. Before him, Unmukt Chand had made his debut in the Big Bash League. Nikhil wants to give his 100 per cent performance for the team and win the title. He said, I have been waiting for this opportunity for the last three years, and I am grateful that I got this opportunity.
