The 16th season of IPL is to start on 31st March and will run till 28th May. According to reports, the current season could be Mahendra Singh Dhoni's last season as a player. He also said in 2021 that he wants to play his last T20 in Chennai. According to a CSK official, "This will be MS's last season as a player. That is what we know, but obviously, it is his decision."

Under the captaincy of Dhoni, CSK won 4 IPLs and 2 Champions League. The win percentage is 59.60. He is the only captain to win 100+ matches in IPL. The team has won 121 out of 204 matches. CSK will open the campaign against defending champions Gujarat Titans. This match will be held in Ahmedabad on the very first day i.e. 31st March. Chennai will play its first match at home from Lucknow on 3rd April. IPL match will be held in Chennai after three years. Dhoni will play at Chepauk Stadium after 1427 days.

After Dhoni's departure, England's Ben Stokes, India's Ajinkya Rahane and Ruturaj Gaikwad are involved in the captaincy race. The team would not want to go back with Jadeja. The team can look at Ruturaj as the future captain. Rahane has experience in captaincy. Stokes has a lot of experience. He knows the qualities of leadership, so his claim is also strong.
