Demand to open highways blocked due to farmers' protest; Supreme Court will hear
Supreme Court: A petition has been filed in the apex court on behalf of a social worker resident of Punjab. The petition states that farmers and farmer organizations have blocked the entire national and state highways in Punjab indefinitely.
A petition has been filed demanding the opening of highways blocked due to farmers' protest in the Supreme Court. According to the December 9 cause list uploaded on the website of the apex court, a bench led by Justice Suryakant will hear the petition.
The petition has appealed to the court to direct the Center and others responsible to immediately open the national and state highways blocked due to farmers' protests in Punjab. In fact, farmers have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after the Delhi march was stopped by the security forces under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha.
The apex court has filed a petition on behalf of a social worker residing in Punjab. It said that farmers and farmer organizations are not allowed to go to Delhi. After this, they blocked the entire national and state highways in Punjab indefinitely. The Court could, in such a situation, direct the Centre and others to lift the ban on farmers' demonstrations and simultaneously ensure that the national highways and railway tracks are not blocked by the agitating farmers.
The petition states that the people of Punjab and neighboring states are facing immense difficulty. They are not able to reach hospitals from time to time in case of emergency medical situations since ambulances are also being stopped on national and state highways throughout the state of Punjab.
