Punjab Kings have pulled off a massive signing ahead of the Indian Premier League 2025 mega auction. The franchise has roped in former Australian captain Ricky Ponting as their new coach. He was the coach of Delhi Capitals since 2018. However, as Delhi continued to perform poorly for a few seasons consecutively, they broke ties with him a few months ago.

While doing so, Punjab Kings has hinted by Tweeting: In which he has told that Ponting will be his next head coach. Punjab Kings has tweeted and shared a picture of ODI World Cup, Spring, Ko-Ko Bura's bat and bridge. Punjab Kings have changed their 5 coaches in the last 7 years. Ponting will be the sixth coach of Punjab in the last 7 years. Last season, Punjab Kings performed poorly under the leadership of Shikhar Dhawan.

The team could not qualify for the playoff race. Ponting joined MI for the first time as a coach in the year 2013. Mumbai also won the first title this year under Rohit Sharma's captaincy. After this, he stayed with Mumbai Indians till 2018. In the year 2018, Ponting joined Delhi Capitals as a coaching staff. During this time, the Delhi team reached playoffs in the years 2019, 2020, and 2021.

In IPL 2024, Punjab Kings finished 9th in the table with 10 points (-0.353). Consequently, this was the 10th consecutive season in which the team failed to progress beyond the league stage. Notably, Punjab last progressed beyond the league stage in 2014. Under the captaincy of George Bailey, the team finished as runner-up that season. Besides this, the Punjab team progressed to the semi-finals in 2008.
