Let's carefully look at the latest report of the Road Transport Ministry on road accidents. It is clear that there is no direct relation between the number of accidents and the number of deaths in accidents. According to the report, adopting safety measures during travel and controlling the vehicle's speed has been the biggest reason for avoiding death during accidents. This is confirmed by the figures given in the report. Despite the number of accidents being very high in many cities, the number of deaths in accidents there is relatively high. According to the report, even though Delhi remains the capital of the country in road accidents, in reality, the roads of many small cities are more deadly than Delhi in terms of road accidents.

According to the report, compared to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai, the risk of death in a road accident is higher on the roads of capitals like Jaipur, Raipur, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow. While the probability of being killed in a road accident is around 25 percent in Delhi, 19 percent in Mumbai, 9 percent in Kolkata, and 14 percent in Chennai, in cities like Ahmedabad, Raipur Jaipur, and Lucknow this probability ranges from 28 to 43 percent. Whereas in cities like Indore, Bhopal, and Jabalpur, despite the number of accidents being very high, the possibility of death in accidents here is less than expected.

The report said that cases of death in accidents increase significantly when the user does not use safety measures like helmets and seat belts. The report said that a total of 168491 people died in road accidents in the year 2022, out of which 50029 passengers were not wearing helmets and 16715 passengers were without seat belts. Thus, out of the total deaths in accidents, the number of people who were traveling without safety measures was 39.61 percent. According to the report, the number of drivers who lost their lives without helmets was 71 percent and the number of drivers who lost their lives without seat belts was 50.2 percent.

Fact Seat:

- Total accidents in India in 2022 4,61,312
- Deaths in road accidents 1,68,491
- Number of injured 4,43,366

Speeding remains the biggest killer on Indian roads. According to the report, this is the reason for about 75 percent of the accidents in 2022. According to the report, 67 percent of the accidents occurred on straight roads, where the speed is high. About 13 percent of accidents occurred on winding and broken roads.
