England's left-arm fast bowler David Willey has announced on social media that he will retire from international cricket after the World Cup being played in India. 33-year-old David Willey is a dangerous fast bowler. However, he has not been able to do anything special for his team in the mega-event being played in India.
It is being told that Willey's decision to retire comes after the ECB's decision not to offer him a central contract for the 2023-24 cycle. Willey has taken five wickets in his three matches in the World Cup. Which includes three wickets (KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav) and 42 runs while batting lower order in the match against India.
Willey wrote in his post on social media, "I never wanted this day to come. I have only dreamed of playing cricket for England since childhood. I have taken this decision after much consideration and with great regret." "I have decided that the time has come to retire from all forms of international cricket. I will not play international cricket after the World Cup."
Willey further wrote, "I wear the England shirt with great pride and have given everything I have for the badge on my chest. I am extremely proud to be part of an incredible team with some of the best players in the world." I feel lucky. I have made good friends and I have gone through some very difficult times. I would like to thank my entire family. They have supported me completely."
Willey made his England debut against Ireland in May 2015 and played under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan, Trevor Bayliss, and Andrew Strauss. So far he has taken 94 wickets in 70 ODI matches and 51 wickets in 43 T20s. After a checkered career, Willey was also part of England's final squad for the 2019 World Cup but was dropped at the last minute to make way for fast bowler Jofra Archer.
David Willey has taken 51 wickets and 226 runs in 43 T20 International matches. Willey has played 77 first-class, 153 List A, and 270 T20 matches in his career so far. In this, he took 198, 182, and 270 wickets. Apart from this, he also scored 2515 First Class, 2109 List A and 3720 T20 runs.
