Dalit medical student D. Preeti (26) died late on Sunday night in Hyderabad, Telangana. Post Graduation First Year student Preeti, upset with the ragging of her senior Mohammad Saif, did a suicide attempt four days ago. He gave himself an injection of poison. Preeti was admitted to a hospital in Hyderabad but died on 26 February.
Mohammad Ali Saif, a second-year student of Post Graduation in Preeti's college on the complaint of Preeti's father Narendra, has been arrested. He has been booked under ragging, provoking suicide and under the SC/ST Act. He also accused the college and hospital administration of negligence. He said that Preeti had lodged a complaint against the accused in both places, but no action was taken.
Warangal Police Commissioner AV Ranganath said that Preeti, a first-year student of post-graduation at Kakatia Medical College, Warangal, was working in a night shift at MGM Hospital on 22 February. It was here that he attempted suicide. He was last seen in the Emergency Ward where he was on duty.
She was then seen when she came out of her room and told some doctors that she had pain in her head and abdomen. She was later found unconscious. He was shifted to Hyderabad in critical circumstances.
The police commissioner said that the WhatsApp chat between the two shows that the accused was taking Preeti's ragging. He said that further investigation will be done on the basis of the toxicology report.
On Preity's death, several tall Tribal Union staged a protest outside Hyderabad's NIMS Hospital, Kakatia Medil College and Warangal's MGM Hospital. Preeti's family has also refused to send Preity's body from NIMS Hospital for postmortem.
The National Commission for National Human Rights Commission and SC/ST has taken cognizance of the case and sent notice to the government, MGM Hospital Superintendent and Department of Anesthesiology Head and College Principal. Governor Tamilisai Saundararajan met Preeti at the hospital. He has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for Preeti's family.
