Cybercrime: Russian hackers allegedly gained access to Microsoft's leadership team by breaking into the company's system
Cyber Crime: In a blog post, Microsoft said the intrusion began in late November last year and was discovered on January 12. However, very little access was made to Microsoft's corporate accounts and some emails and attached documents were stolen.
Microsoft has disclosed that a hacking group sponsored by the Russian government was able to gain access to its corporate systems through email. It's referred to as Midnight Blizzard or Nobelium. Along with staff members from the company's cybersecurity and legal departments, the hackers also gained access to the accounts of members of the leadership team.
In a blog post, Microsoft said the intrusion began in late November last year and was discovered on January 12. However, very little access was made to Microsoft's corporate accounts and some emails and attached documents were stolen.
The company did not, however, specify who or how many email accounts were compromised. The system breach was discovered by the company's threat research team, who then moved to lessen the threat. Microsoft restricted access to the system for hackers by prohibiting these activities.
