Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to inaugurate the country's first water metro service in Kochi, Kerala on 25 April. Apart from this, PM Modi will also inaugurate the Digital Science Park in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.
The water metro service in the port city of Kochi has been built at a cost of Rs 1,136.83 crore. Under this project, 10 nearby islands will be connected to Kochi City.
This non-stop connectivity will be done with battery-operated electric hybrid boats. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday described the Kochi Water Metro as the state's "dream project". In a tweet, he said that good times are about to come for the transport and tourism sectors of the southern states.
Vijayan wrote, 'World class Kochi Water Metro is ready for its journey. It is the dream project of Kerala to connect 10 islands in and around Kochi. The Kochi Water Metro Project has 78 electric boats and 38 terminals at a cost of Rs 1,136.83 crore. This project is funded by the Government of Kerala (GoK) and KfW. KfW is a German funding agency.
In the first phase of this project, service will be started soon from High Court-Vypin Terminals to Vytila-Kakkanad Terminals. Passengers can travel on both Kochi Metro and Water Metro using the 'Kochi-1' card. Apart from this, they can also book tickets digitally.
PM Modi will visit Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu on 24 and 25 April. On April 25, he will flag off Kerala's first Vande Bharat Express between Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod at Thiruvananthapuram Central Station.
This train will cover 11 districts namely Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod. Apart from the Kochi Water Metro, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the rail electrification of the Dindigul-Palani-Palakkad section.
