According to the rules of Indian Railways, any passenger can book his seat four months before the departure of the train i.e. 120 days. If you do then it is very possible that you will get a confirmed ticket.
But in case of any emergency, you can also book a Tatkal ticket on the train. The Tatkal ticket is booked 24 hours before the departure of the train. To book AC Tatkal tickets, booking starts from 10 am every day whereas for sleeper tickets booking starts after one hour from 11 am.
Railways have made two rules for buying unreserved tickets i.e. general tickets. If you want to travel in general class for a distance of 199 km or less, you have to buy the ticket on the same day of departure of the train. Your ticket for this journey is valid only for 3 hours.
But if you have to travel a distance of 200 kilometers or more, then you can book a general ticket 3 days in advance.
