Committee will be formed to implement UCC in Gujarat: The retired judge will be president, announcement has also been made in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh
A committee will be formed to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Gujarat. State Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi announced this on Saturday. He told that CM Bhupendra Patel has taken this historic decision in the cabinet meeting today.
Union Minister Purushottam Rupala said in a tweet that the chairman of the committee will be a retired judge of the High Court and it will have 3-4 members. Earlier the governments of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh also announced the implementation of UCC. The Gujarat government has taken this decision before the assembly elections. For this reason, it is considered historical.
Uniform Civil Code (UCC) means- Uniform law for every citizen of India, irrespective of religion or caste. According to media reports, in whichever state the UCC will be applicable - there, the same law will be applicable for all religions in marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and division of property.
Many leaders have supported the UCC. He says that this will bring equality to the country. However, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has termed it an unconstitutional and anti-minority move.
AIMPLB members say that the law is being used by Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and the central government to divert attention from inflation, the economy and rising unemployment. The Center had earlier this month told the Supreme Court that it cannot direct Parliament to enact or enforce any law on the Uniform Civil Code in the country.
According to the information, in the 2019 Lok Sabha election manifesto of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the BJP had promised to implement the UCC if voted into power.
