Celebrities and celebrities show responsibility in endorsing products, SC comments on banning misleading advertisements
Misleading Ads: The Supreme Court has banned misleading advertisements and cautioned celebrities and celebrities about choosing advertisements responsibly. A bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah also directed the concerned central ministries to inform them about the misleading advertisements and the action taken or proposed against them by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA).
Banning misleading advertisements, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said celebrities and public figures need to act responsibly while endorsing any consumer product. The top court directed that before permission is given to release advertisements, a self-declaration should be obtained from the advertisers on the lines of the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994.
A code of advertising prescribed by Rule 7 of the 1994 law mandates that celebrity advertisements be created in compliance with national laws. A bench consisting of Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah further instructed the relevant central ministries to inform them of the deceptive advertising and the actions the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has taken or plans to take against them.
