The CBI arrested a person who was absconding for the last 20 years and was even declared dead by the court, but finally, he was caught by the CBI. The accused has been identified as V Chalapathi Rao, who was accused of fraud in SBI Bank 20 years ago. To avoid arrest, he staged a fake drama of his death and also lived in different places by changing his identity. However, he could not escape from the CBI.

The CBI had registered a case against Chalapathi Rao in May 2002. Chalapathi Rao worked in the SBI branch in Hyderabad. Chalapathi was accused of defrauding the bank of Rs 50 lakh on the basis of fake quotations and fake salary certificates from an electronic shop opened in the name of his family members and close associates. The CBI filed a chargesheet against Chalapathi on December 31, 2004. Meanwhile, Chalapathi absconded. Chalapathi's wife filed a missing person's report with the police and then declared the absconding accused dead and appealed in the civil court. The civil court also considered the accused dead and passed an order. However, the accused was alive and kept changing his identity and hideouts to avoid the CBI.

The accused not only changed his identity during his absconding but also got married for the second time. The accused got all his identity cards including his Aadhaar card made fake. During his absconding, the accused fled to Salem in Tamil Nadu and got married for the second time there. However, in the year 2014, he left Salem and reached Bhopal. After spending some time in Bhopal, he shifted to Rudrapur in Uttarakhand. The CBI found out that the accused was in Rudrapur, but by the time the CBI reached him, he left Rudrapur and fled. Later, the CBI came to know that he stayed in an ashram in Verul village of Aurangabad. In December 2021, he also left the ashram and allegedly carried out a fraud of Rs 70 lakh in the ashram as well.

After this, the accused went to Bharatpur in Rajasthan and then left Bharatpur and went to Tirunelveli with one of his disciples. The accused was preparing to flee to Sri Lanka by sea. The CBI arrested him from Narasinganallur village in Tirunelveli on August 4. The accused was produced in the court by the CBI, from where he has been sent on remand till August 16.
