Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma Saturday appealed to the Centre to understand the position of Mizoram in the matter of giving shelter to refugees coming from neighboring Bangladesh. An official of the state Home Department told IANS that since 2022, nearly 2,000 'Jo' ethnic people from Bangladesh have taken refuge in Mizoram.

He called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi and apprised him of the fact that the state government cannot send back the 'Jo' ethnic people to the Chittagong Hill Tracts, CHT of Bangladesh. He informed the Prime Minister that many people of the 'Bawm' tribe, one of the Mizo tribes, have been taking refuge in Mizoram from Bangladesh since 2022, and many of them are still trying to enter the state.

Added to this, the two leaders deliberated on some other issues too, such as the shifting of the Assam Rifles base from Aizawl to Zokhawsang on the eastern outskirts of the state capital and implementation of a Hand-Holding Policy—a flagship program of the Mizoram government.
