The Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman extended the Jal Jeevan Mission in budget times when she announced it. She mentioned that Jal Jeevan Mission will go till 2028 with the budget. We will make a tap in each and every household a reality.

Presenting the budget in Parliament, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that under the Jal Jeevan Mission, 15 crore families, considered to be 80 percent of India's rural population, have been given potable tap water connections. He said that I am happy to announce the extension of this mission till 2028 with an increase in the total outlay to achieve 100 percent coverage.

He further said that the focus of the mission will be on the quality of infrastructure and operation and maintenance of rural piped water supply schemes through public participation. Separate MoUs will be signed with the states and union territories for sustainable and citizen-centric water delivery. Currently, this scheme was in force till 2024.

Jal Jeevan Mission was launched in 2019. It is being implemented for Rs 3.60 lakh crore, with a contribution of Rs 2.08 lakh crore from the central government and Rs 1.52 lakh crore from the states. This mission is on its way to achieving its target. The goal of JJM is to provide safe drinking water to all.

A report in October last year said that tap water connections for rural households in India have increased fivefold in the last five years. By October 2024, the number of rural families with tap connections increased to 15.20 crores. At the time of the launch of the mission, only 3.23 rural families had tap connections, but at present, it has increased five times. The report said, that by October 10, 2024, 11.96 additional households were provided tap connections under JJM. With this, now 15.20 crore rural families are currently availing the benefit of tap connections.
