"BSNL did not recover from Reliance Jio, causing the government loss of Rs 1757 crore," CAG statement

Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) on Tuesday said that telecom operator BSNL did not get any amount from Reliance Jio for 10 years as per its infrastructure sharing agreement. This caused the government to lose Rs 1,757.56 crore.

CAG said Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) failed to deduct part of the license fee from the revenue share given to telecom infrastructure providers (TIP), causing the government company a loss of Rs 38.36 crore.

The statement said that BSNL M/s Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. (RJIL) failed to implement the Master Service Agreement (MSA) and did not bill for additional technology used on BSNL's shared infrastructure, such as towers. This resulted in a loss of Rs 1,757.76 crore to the government exchequer between May 2014 and March 2024, and the government also had to pay penal interest on it. It was also found that BSNL had under-billed the infrastructure sharing charges.
