BSF has decided to form a special marine battalion and deploy powerful drones in the Sunderbans located on the India-Bangladesh international border. The BSF has planned to deploy a marine battalion of over 1,100 personnel, a squadron of around 40 drones, and 12-14 all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) to ensure security and prevent infiltration and smuggling in the strategically important and swampy Sundarban mangrove area. Have planned.
Sources said that the blueprint of the plan has been prepared by the BSF's Eastern Command Headquarters in Kolkata and the final approval and financial sanction is awaited from the Union Home Ministry. The Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest area, are a group of more than 100 islands. Spread over an area of 9,630 square km in India, adjacent to the Bangladesh border, this area is a complex system of drains, rivers, and creeks.
The remaining part of Sundarban comes under Bangladesh. It is situated on the delta of Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers on the banks of the Bay of Bengal. A senior official said that Sundarban is a strategic and important area on the India-Bangladesh border. Its effective control and security are the need of the hour as this inaccessible forest and river area can be used by terrorists and criminals for infiltration.
That is why BSF has decided to raise special marine battalions and deploy powerful drones that can conduct long-range surveillance. There are also plans to deploy some ATVs to reach these areas for better patrolling. BSF has sought permission from the Bengal government to deploy its patrolling teams in the forest department outposts located in the Sundarbans.
