Bookie asked Siraj for team information: Hyderabad driver called before Australia tour, lured money
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bowler Mohammed Siraj has complained to the BCCI about a phone call. Siraj said that a person had called him and asked for inside news about the team. BCCI and Anti Corruption Unit (ACU) have started investigating the matter.
A BCCI official aware of the matter told news agency PTI that the caller to Siraj is a driver from Hyderabad. He is addicted to betting. He made this call after losing a lot of money betting on the match. This person had also given the greed of money to Siraj. This incident happened just before Australia's tour of India. The Australian team toured India in the months of February and March this year.
The officials of the investigating agency have arrested the caller to Siraj. The official told the news agency that this person had lost lakhs of rupees in betting on matches. The team is accompanied by an ACU officer. He monitors every activity of the players.
The ACU officer also briefs the players on do's and don'ts. If a player is contacted by an unknown person by any means, the player is required to immediately inform the ACU officers. If a player does not give information, action is taken against him.
The issue of spot-fixing in IPL has come to the fore earlier as well. In the year 2013, three Rajasthan Royals players S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila were accused of fixing. The probe agency had found spot-fixing in three matches this season. Apart from these three, 23 people were arrested. The names of many big people also came to the fore in this. Vindu Dara Singh was also involved in this.
At the same time, the names of Kooner Raj Kundra of Rajasthan Royals and Gurunath Meiyappan associated with Chennai Super Kings were also included. In 2015, the committee banned Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings for two years. At the same time, the players involved in fixing were banned for life. At the same time, in the year 2019, BCCI removed the life ban from Sreesanth to 7 years. On the other two cricketers, the punishment was later reduced by lifting the life ban.
2000, Hansie Cronje: The year 2000 is involved in the biggest match-fixing in cricket history. Bookie Sanjeev Chawla, the main accused in the biggest cricket match-fixing scandal of that year, was accused of match-fixing along with South African cricketer Hansie Cronje. After which Cronje was banned for life.
1990, Salim Malik: A similar case dates back to the 90s. When in 1990 there was a hue and cry about match-fixing in Pakistan. Pakistani cricketer Salim Malik was banned for life in that controversy.
1994, Shane Warne and Mark Waugh: In the year 1994, two famous Australian cricketers Shane Warne and Mark Waugh were also involved in match-fixing. The two players were found guilty of accepting bribes in exchange for information to an Indian bookie when the Australian team was on a tour of Sri Lanka.
