BMW took the wraps off its X5 Protection VR6, with a bulletproof body and the best engine.

After introducing the BMW 7 Series Protection and i7 Protection a few weeks ago, the German luxury car brand has now introduced the X5 Protection, which is based on a revised version of the SUV. The BMW X5 Protection VR6 comes in the form of an armor-plated bulletproof luxury SUV. This car will be displayed at the Munich Motor Show next month.

Despite being an armor-plated SUV, the BMW X5 Protection VR6 cannot be easily distinguished from other BMW X5 models. As the automaker says, stealth is this car's first line of defense. It adds twin M bars in the front kidney grille, high-gloss black M mirror caps, BMW Individual roof rails in high-gloss Shadow Line, and twin exhaust pipes typical of the M exhaust system.

The SUV features high-strength steel plates molded to fit the body in areas such as the doors, side frames, roof, and bulkhead. The car also gets an armored trunk divider and an aluminum underbody shrapnel shield. Its fuel tank comes with a special cover that can seal the puncture to prevent leakage in case a bullet or shrapnel penetrates the shield. This SUV meets VPAM ballistic requirements. However, customers can further increase the protection level of the SUV by opting for optional underbody armor and additional roof armor.

Powering the BMW X5 Protection is the same 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine that powers the standard BMW X5 M60i xDrive. This engine is paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to generate a maximum power of 515 bhp and a maximum torque of 750 Nm.

The car brand has not revealed the weight of the X5 Protection, but there is some extra weight on the armor plates, which is affecting the performance. It can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 5.9 seconds, which is much less than the M60i's timing of 4.2 seconds.
