Deadly clashes between rival militias in the Libyan capital left at least 27 people dead and residents trapped in their homes unable to escape the violence. Medical officials were informed about this. It appears to be the most intense fighting to rock Tripoli this year. An official said on Tuesday that at least four people were killed but it was not immediately clear whether they were fighters or civilians.

According to local media reports, the clashes broke out late on Monday night between fighters of the 444 Brigade and the Special Detention Force.

Reports said tensions escalated after Mahmoud Hamza, a senior commander of the 444 Brigade, was reportedly detained earlier in the day at an airport in Tripoli by a rival group.

Libya's Center for Emergency Medicine and Assistance, the medical body deployed during humanitarian disasters and wars, said on Wednesday morning that more than 100 people were wounded in the fighting.
