After the Indian team's embarrassment in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Gautam Gambhir insisted on all the players playing domestic red-ball cricket, after which the matter got heated. All the cricket legends also advised seniors like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Shubman Gill to play Ranji Trophy. The issue of domestic cricket also came up in the recent review meeting regarding losing the Test series against Australia. After which BCCI also advised the senior players to play in the second phase of Ranji Trophy. Rohit Sharma has joined Mumbai's Ranji camp. At the same time, Shubman Gill is also going to return to Ranji after 2 years. According to reports, he will take part in the Punjab vs Karnataka match on 23 January.

Shubman Gill has been rested in the India vs England T20 International series. However, the BCCI is now all focused on the ICC Champions Trophy. It is believed that he will play the ODI series against England before leaving for Dubai for the Champions Trophy. A report by HT quoted a source in the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) as saying that Shubman Gill is available for the Ranji match for Punjab against Karnataka on January 23.

Indian star batsman Shubman Gill played his last domestic match in the Duleep Trophy last year. While he played his last Ranji match in 2022. This top-order batsman of India has played only one red ball domestic cricket match in the last 4 years. Other senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant have also not played domestic cricket for a long time. Though Rohit Sharma has joined Mumbai's Ranji Trophy team for practice at Wankhede, it is not sure whether he will be able to play against Jammu and Kashmir.

Shubhman Gill batted very poorly in the India vs Australia Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He scored only 93 runs in 5 innings of three matches. Gill was no different from the rest of the star batsmen who failed to perform well. The result was that India had to face defeat by 1-3 at the hands of Australia.
