Shakib Al Hasan became Bangladesh ODI Skipper: Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal has been ruled out of the Asia Cup due to a back injury. In such a situation, before the Asia Cup and ODI World, the team had to elect a new captain. Choosing a captain in front of the team was no less than a challenge. In such a situation, the selectors have handed over the command of the team in the hands of the star all-rounder.
Bangladesh on Friday named veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan as its ODI captain for both the Asia Cup and the 2023 World Cup. Apart from the two major events, Bangladesh will play an ODI series against New Zealand in late September before traveling to India for the World Cup starting on October 5.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hasan said that we have appointed Shakib Al Hasan as the captain for the Asia Cup and the World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squads will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members.
Shakib has replaced Tamim Iqbal, who has been ruled out of the Asia Cup due to a back injury. Tamim is now preparing to play the home ODI series against New Zealand starting on 21 September. Tamim announced his retirement from international cricket on 6 July but changed his decision the following afternoon after Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged him to reconsider his decision.
Now Shakib has become the captain of Bangladesh in all three formats of the game. He has been the Test and T20I captain of the team since the beginning of last year. Shakib last captained the side as Bangladesh's ODI captain on 12 May 2017 against Ireland at Malahide and the match ended in a no-result.
Overall, Shakib has led Bangladesh in 52 ODIs, 19 Tests, and 39 T20Is, and his tenure, which began in 2009, has been marked by a very short tenure.
