Australia ends victory drought after 17 years, defending champion England in danger of being eliminated

The Mitchell Marsh-led Australia team registered a spectacular 36-run win against defending champion England in the 17th match of the T20 World Cup 2024. With this win, the Australian team has reached the top of the points table of Group B with four points, while the England team has reached the fourth position with just one point. The most important thing is that this win is Australia's first win against England in the T20 World Cup after 17 years. Now, Australia's entry into the Super-8 is almost certain. Whereas, England is in danger of being eliminated.

England won the toss and decided to bowl first in Barbados. Australia, who batted first, recorded a 70-run partnership for the first wicket between Travis Head and David Warner. Warner was out after scoring 39 runs, and Head was out after scoring 34. Following that, captain Mitchell Marsh scored 35 runs and Stoinis added 30 runs to raise Australia's total to 201 in 20 overs.

England, who came out to chase Australia's 202-run goal, enjoyed a superb partnership of 73 runs for the first wicket between opener Phil Salt and skipper Jos Buttler. After both of them returned to the pavilion, the Australian team applied pressure on England's middle order, limiting them to 165 runs and winning by 36 runs.

Australia had earlier registered its last win against England in the T20 World Cup in 2007. After that, the Australian team had to wait for 17 long years to win against England. Finally, in the current World Cup, Australia has succeeded in ending the drought of victory. With this, England's hopes of reaching the Super-8 have also been dashed.
