After losing in the third set tie-break in each of his ATP Finals matches last year, Daniil Medvedev made a spectacular comeback with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Andrey Rublev in his first match of 2023. Medvedev saved seven break points in the opening set before dominating from the start in the second set. The win extended Medvedev's lead for most tour-level wins (65) and most hard-court wins (48) this season. While the straight sets result took the 2020 ATP Finals champion to the top of the Red Group, Alexander Zverev also went 1-0 up after an afternoon win against Carlos Alcaraz.

“I felt good and I managed to bring it on the court,” Medvedev said after the match. The first set was really tough. I managed to get a slight lead at the most important moments, and that helped me in the second, so I'm really happy.

Monday's result provided the perfect start to his bid to equal Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz on six tour-level titles in the year. Rublev will try to bounce back against Alcaraz on Wednesday. Medvedev will face Zverev with first place in the group on the same day.
