According to the latest annual report of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), at least 6,841 cases of corruption probed by the CBI were pending in various courts, of which 313 cases were pending for more than 20 years. Out of the total cases, 2039 cases were pending for more than 10 years, 2324 for more than five years, 842 for more than three years, and 1323 for less than three years.

The Central Vigilance Commission took note of the huge pendency of cases in various courts. It was observed that as on December 31, 2022, 6,841 cases were pending hearings, of which 313 cases were overdue. Apart from these, a total of 12,408 appeals and revisions in corruption cases were pending in the High Courts and the Supreme Court.

The report said that 692 cases were pending investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as on December 31, 2022, of which 42 were under investigation for more than five years. Usually, the CBI has to complete the investigation within one year from the date of registration of the case. A total of 60 cases were pending investigation for more than three years but less than five years, 79 cases for more than two years but less than three years, 138 cases for more than one year but less than two years, and 373 cases for investigation.

The Central Vigilance Commission has observed that there has been some delay in the completion of the investigation in some cases. Some of the reasons for delay include delay in investigation due to overwork, inadequacy of manpower, delay in receiving replies to Letters Rogatory (LR), and time taken in locating and examining witnesses living in distant places. It added that 52 cases of departmental action were also pending against Group A officers of the CBI itself.

According to the report, out of these, 23 cases were for more than four years, five cases between three and four years, seven cases between two and three years, nine cases between one year and two years, and eight cases less than one year. were pending since There were 19 cases of departmental action pending against Group B and C personnel of the federal agency.

The CBI registered 946 cases in 2022, including 829 Regular Cases (RC) and 117 Preliminary Inquiries (PE). Of these, 163 traps were laid to detect bribery cases during 2022, while 46 cases of possession of assets disproportionate to income were registered during the year, the report said.

Explain that the Central Vigilance Commission monitors the work of the CBI in relation to the investigation conducted under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The report noted that out of 946 cases, 107 were taken up on the orders of constitutional courts and 30 cases were initiated on references received from State Governments/Union Territories.
