America will change policies related to missile technology export to India; Cooperation in space sector will increase
MTCR: US Principal Deputy National Security Advisor John Finer told reporters during a White House conference call that the goal of updating export control policies under the MTCR is to further advance commercial space cooperation with close partners like India. Let's know more about this.
The Biden administration in the US is in the process of finalizing a national security memorandum that will alter the US export control policies under the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). The White House said this on Tuesday. This development is likely to facilitate more India-US cooperation between companies in the space sector.
Principal Deputy National Security Advisor John Finer said during a White House conference call with reporters that the update in the export control policies under the MTCR was to further advance the cooperation in commercial space with close partners like India.
Finer said, "We are taking steps to remove obstacles to private sector cooperation and importantly, we are in the process of finalizing the National Security Memorandum. Under this, changes will be made to the export control policies related to the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR)."
Finer, Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, and India's Ambassador to the US Vinay Kwatra paid a visit to Houston on Tuesday, where they met the astronauts from the Indian Space Research Organization. Indian astronauts are training at NASA's Johnson Space Center before leaving for the International Space Station next year.
The MTCR was created in 1987 by the G-7 countries as an informal political agreement among its 35 member countries to restrict the proliferation of missiles and missile technology. India joined the MTCR in 2016.
