The US has been targeting al-Qaeda-linked terrorists and ISIS members in northwestern Syria for the past several years. Most of those killed in the rebel-held province of Idlib were members of al-Qaeda's branch, Horas al-Din. In Arabic, it means 'protector of religion'. This group includes hardline al-Qaeda members.
ISIS had captured an area of 88 thousand square kilometres spread from western Syria to eastern Iraq. After this, in 2019, the Islamic organization was driven out. However, last month the UN warned that the threat from the ISIS organization is increasing in Syria and its neighbouring countries. According to BBC, about 5000-7000 members of ISIS are spread between Iraq and Syria. Half of these people are fighters of the organization.
