AI cameras are installed on this National Highway, SMS alert comes on breaking traffic rules

Drivers who violate traffic laws on National Highway 275 (Mysuru-Bangalore Highway) must exercise caution. Now, cameras integrated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) will identify the owner of the car based on the number plate and promptly send an alert to their mobile phone in the event of a traffic infringement. Following this, information will be delivered to the violator's home.

This approach has shown to be extremely effective. A total fine of Rs 8.99 crore was collected in just one month. A total of 161,491 infractions were recorded between June 1 and June 30. The majority of these incidents were detected by ITMS cameras as a result of drivers failing to wear seat belts.

Other violations include 12,609 general traffic rule violations, 1,087 triple-riding cases, 9,079 helmetless driving cases, 7,671 speeding cases, 7 driving in the opposite direction of traffic, and 577 no-entry violations.

The system also records the exact location, date, and time of the offense, which is sent to the registered mobile number linked to the vehicle. The Mysuru-Bengaluru National Highway 275 is monitored by 60 surveillance cameras in the 119-km stretch.

In other news, in January, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) issued a tender worth Rs 688 crore for "additional works to ensure road safety on Bengaluru-Mysuru controlled access highway".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the highway on March 12, 2023, just ahead of the Karnataka assembly elections. The lack of safety measures on the expressway and a rise in fatal accidents have sparked anger among commuters. Parts of the expressway are flooded.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had inspected the expressway in July 2023 and said that it was opened to traffic in a hurry without completing all the works, including road safety measures. The state government had written to the NHAI to fix the problems on the expressway.
