Under new captain Tom Latham's leadership, New Zealand recovered from a disappointing performance in Sri Lanka to achieve historic success on Indian soil.

In its 68-year history, India suffered its first series defeat at the hands of New Zealand. In the Pune Test match, New Zealand defeated the Indian team by 133 runs, and they now lead the three-match Test series 2-0.

While New Zealand scored 259 runs in the first innings, they bundled out the Indian team for 156 runs during the Pune Test match. The Kiwi team scored 255 runs in the second innings, thereby giving India a target of 359 runs to win on the basis of the first-innings lead. While chasing the target, India's team came out at 245 runs. New Zealand's second Test match was won by 133 runs. Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma has equated the unwanted record of captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni with this defeat.

As a matter of fact, under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni from 2008 to 2014, the Indian team played a total of 11 Test match series, out of which it had to face defeat in one series. On the other hand, under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, the Indian team played five games in a Test match series from the year 2021 to 2024 and lost the series for the first time to New Zealand. Well, in that case, Virat Kohli has a better record as captain. The Indian team under his captaincy played 11 series from the year 2014 to 2021 and didn't lose any.

Speaking of which, this is the first time the Indian cricket team had to lose a Test series since 2012. In that period, it was England that defeated India 2-1 in the four-Test series.
