After Delhi, the price of CNG has increased by Rs 1.50 per kg in Mumbai too and the price of piped cooking gas (PNG) has been increased by one rupee. Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), which supplies CNG for vehicles and piped natural gas (PNG) to homes in Mumbai and surrounding cities, has said that the increased prices will be applicable from midnight of July 8 and 9.

The company said in a statement, 'To meet the increasing volumes of CNG and domestic piped natural gas (PNG) segments and due to reduction in domestic gas allocation, MGL is sourcing natural gas (imported LNG) at additional market price, due to which the cost of gas is higher.'

According to the company, to partially compensate for the increase in gas cost, the delivery price of CNG has been increased by Rs 1.50 per kg and the price of domestic PNG has been increased by Rs 1 per standard cubic meter (SCM). With this, the revised delivery price of CNG including all taxes in Mumbai and its surrounding areas will be Rs 75 per kg and the price of domestic PNG will be Rs 48 per SCM.

On June 22, Indraprastha Gas Limited, the city gas license holder for the national capital and adjacent areas, raised the price of CNG in Delhi by one rupee per kilogram, to Rs 75.09. However, there has been no change in PNG pricing in Delhi, which continues at Rs 48.59 per SCM.

The company said, "Even after the above revision, MGL's CNG offers attractive savings of about 50 percent and 17 percent respectively compared to petrol and diesel at current price levels in Mumbai, while MGL's domestic PNG offers unmatched convenience, safety, reliability, and environmental superiority to consumers. Even after the marginal increase, MGL's CNG and domestic PNG prices are the lowest in the country.

Natural gas extracted from the ground and seabed is converted into CNG for use in automobiles and piped to homes for cooking. This year, supply from the state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation's (ONGC) domestic fields has not been sufficient to meet demand. Gas from ONGC fields accounts for 66-67 percent of CNG demand, with the rest imported.
