Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, known as the wall of Indian hockey, will retire after the bronze medal match against Spain on Thursday. This 36-year-old veteran from Kerala is playing his fourth Olympics. He played an important role in getting India a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
Sreejesh made his debut 18 years ago in the South Asian Games held in Sri Lanka in 2006. Since then Sreejesh has been a regular member of the Indian team. During this time, many changes were seen in the team but the team management's trust in Sreejesh remained intact. PR Sreejesh is known for his instinctive nature in world hockey.
In a note on a social media post for fans before stepping out on the field for the last time, Sreejesh wrote, "As I stood between the goalposts for the final time, my heart swelled with gratitude and pride. From a young boy with a dream to a man who defends India's honor, this journey has been extraordinary. Today I will play my last match for India. Every save, every leap, the roar of the crowd will always reverberate in my soul. Thank you, India, for believing in me, and for standing by me. This is not the end, but the beginning of memorable moments. Always a goalkeeper of dreams. Jai Hind."
