A class 8 student died after consuming 45 iron tablets at a time in Tamil Nadu's Ooty city. There was a bet among six friends to eat the maximum number of bullets. During this, 13-year-old Jeba Fatima consumed 45 pills. After this Fatima's health deteriorated, and she was admitted to the hospital for treatment. The student died on the third day during treatment here.
The case pertains to Ooty Municipal Urdu Middle School. On March 6, six friends studying in the school went to the principal's room during lunch. When the students saw a box of iron pills kept, they bet that whoever can eat more pills, the more pills they eat, the more courageous will be.
After this, 2 boys and 4 girls present in the room started taking iron pills. During this, Jeba Fatima, studying in class 8, consumed the maximum number of 45 pills. Due to this, Fathima's health deteriorated, the school informed the family about the matter and the student was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. From there the doctors referred him to Chennai, where the student died on the third day during treatment. Fatima's mother teaches Urdu in school.
Apart from Fatima, 5 other students had taken fewer pills. He also told his family members that he was feeling dizzy. On this both, the boys were admitted to Government Medical College, Ooty. While the other three girls were sent to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.
Taking action in this matter, the education department has sought an explanation from 8 teachers and the principal of the school. Teachers say that Fatima has eaten 45 pills. At the same time, three other girls had taken about 10 pills each and both the boys had taken two or three pills.
Officials said that girl students of classes VIII to XII in government schools are given iron tablets once a week. This work has been assigned to a nodal teacher. The nodal teacher was on leave on the day of the incident.
