There is an acute shortage of specialist doctors in the country. There are 25 out of 34 states/UTs where there is more than a 70% shortage of specialist doctors in government hospitals. There is a huge shortage of specialist doctors including surgeons, gynecologists, and pediatrics in the rural areas of these states. This has been revealed in the 2021-22 report of Rural Health Statistics. Madhya Pradesh ranks worst in the country in terms of rural health services. Here 95% of posts of specialist doctors are vacant.
Whereas, 90% of posts of specialist doctors are lying vacant in Gujarat, 79% in Rajasthan, 72% in Uttar Pradesh, 70% in Bihar and 70% in Maharashtra. After this, 94.31% of posts are lying vacant in Kerala, 93.03% in West Bengal and 83.83% in Tamil Nadu. It may be noted that the figures for Delhi-Chandigarh and Nagaland have not been made available.
In the rural areas of Mizoram, Sikkim, Diu-Daman and Puducherry, no specialist doctors have been placed. The report of Rural Health Statistics states that Telangana is considered to be the best. Here around 98% of posts of specialist doctors are fully filled while only 2% of posts are lying vacant.
90 to 99% of posts of specialist doctors are lying vacant in most states. 90 to 99% in 12 states, 80 to 85% in 2 states, 71 to 80% in 7 states, 61 to 70% in 3, 51 to 60% in 2, 41 to 50% in 2 and 30 to 35 in one % of posts are lying vacant. The posts are lying vacant. On the other hand, Mizoram and Sikkim lag behind in terms of rural health services. Not a single specialist doctor has been posted in the government hospitals here.
