India plans the first prototype of the domestic 5.5th-generation fighter, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), to be assembled by 2028.

During the discussion in a recent meeting between the Indian Air Force and the Defense Research and Development Organization, various minute details were discussed regarding the project and its roadmap.

Senior officials said the 5.5th generation AMCA would be a stealth aircraft and weigh around 27 tonnes. It will be able to carry weapons of very high weight. The agencies involved in its construction are engaged in developing such capabilities so that the aircraft is able to carry missiles in a completely stealthy manner.

Officials said that if the engine production and other related work are done on time, its first prototype will be ready by 2028. It will take at least six-seven years to develop and prepare the aircraft for future battles.

DRDO will also select development and production partners for the aircraft project, which will include public-sector undertakings and private-sector companies.

Mass production of 5.5th generation fighter aircraft is likely to start by 2035. It is noteworthy that the prototype of the 4.5th generation fighter aircraft is now expected to be ready in 2026, with a delay of one year.
