More than half (55%) of people in India believe that the central government should focus more on domestic issues rather than global problems. This has come to light at a time when India is establishing itself as a leader of the Global South. According to a survey by American think tank Pew Research Center, India is not the only country where citizens want their leaders to focus on internal issues. People in most countries including America and France agree with India's sentiments.

More than 30,000 people were surveyed in 24 countries across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific region, Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America from February to May this year. The survey also found a link between foreign travel and international engagement. According to the report, people who have travelled abroad feel connected to others globally and believe that their country should be proactive in global affairs while keeping the interests of other nations in mind.

However, this is not the case with India. 60% of Indians in the country feel connected to people from all over the world while only 3% have traveled to 5 or more countries. 66% of Indians want to travel internationally.

Globally, about 83% of people feel close to their own country's citizens. It is highest in India at 90% and lowest in America at 66%. Similarly, 89% of Indians are connected to their local communities, whereas South Korea (50%), the US (54%), Argentina (57%) and Germany (57%) are least likely to do so.
