Under PM Modi's Make in India initiative, work is being done to promote domestic manufacturing capacity in the country. With this initiative, many global companies have come forward to set up their units in India.

Apart from this, companies are working with Indian companies for joint ventures. In this series, international electronics companies are applying for India's incentive program to manufacture laptops, tablets, and servers in India.

At least 32 international electronics companies have applied for the country's incentive program to make laptops, tablets, and servers in India, a top minister said on Wednesday, according to Reuters. This is happening when the government has recently announced a ban on laptop imports.

In fact, according to Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, applications were made by international electronics companies under the PLI program. The country's $2 billion (Rs 16,500 crore) production-linked incentive (PLI) program for information technology hardware was announced in May.

According to a video feed by ANI news agency, Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that companies like Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Dell Technologies, Asus, Acer, and Lenovo are involved in making laptops and other products in India.

The government's PLI scheme for IT hardware is expected to generate investment of Rs 24.3 billion and 75,000 direct jobs. However, India will allow a three-month transition period for imports of laptops, tablets, and personal computers before the new licensing regime comes into effect. The country's trade regulator had given information regarding the transition period on August 5.

The government said in a notification that import consignments can be cleared without a license till October 31 and from November 1, a government permit will be required to clear imports.
