Election Heat Rises in Assam as Khera’s Allegations Trigger Fierce BJP Counterattack
As many as three days before the elections, political tussles in Assam have escalated. Himanta Biswa Sarma took on Pawan Khera, accusing him of fabricating lies regarding his wife holding three passports and establishing a company in the UAE, and even suggested that Khera may be imprisoned for the same.
Mrs. Rinki Bhuiya Sarma, wife of Himanta Biswa Sarma, has also registered an FIR against Khera, warning her of legal action in both civil and criminal courts.
The latest allegations by Pawan Khera, followed by his press conference in Delhi and Guwahati, can be considered his last-ditch attempt to highlight corruption charges against Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Indeed, the Congress party has long been leveling corruption allegations against Himanta Biswa Sarma, seeking to counter his popularity. These allegations range from acquiring thousands of acres of land to amassing vast wealth.
State President and Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, also strongly raised this issue by organizing a Parivartan Yatra in Assam. Himanta Biswa Sarma responded by challenging him to file an FIR with evidence or go to court.

Himanta Biswa Sarma questioned Gogoi's patriotism, alleging his travels to Pakistan and his links with the ISI. To corroborate the allegations, he even released the Assam Police investigation report on February 8th.
Additionally, evidence was presented of Gaurav Gogoi's wife, daughter, and son's British citizenship and that his wife and daughter are Christians, declaring him unfit to protect Assamese identity.
Recognizing the seriousness of Pawan Khera's allegations, which could potentially impact the elections, the BJP launched a sharp retaliation both nationally and in Assam. On Sunday, national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi and on Monday morning, Himanta Biswa Sarma himself detailed how the documents presented by Pawan Khera were fraudulent.
Referring to the life imprisonment sentence for using fake documents to influence elections, Himanta Biswa Sarma assured a thorough investigation and legal action.
According to Sarma, after the completion of the election process, he will also write to the central government to have the entire matter investigated by a central agency. Sarma stated that without certainty of punishment, such baseless allegations could be leveled against any Chief Minister at any time.
Following Himanta Biswa Sarma's strong stance, Gaurav Gogoi dismissed the allegations of possessing three passports, saying the key issue was whether the Chief Minister's family owned properties in the UAE and abroad. He reiterated the corruption allegations against Himanta Biswa Sarma and assured him of ensuring action against him.
